4 Common Misconceptions About Fraternities

Whether it is because of the way they are portrayed in movies or through one or two bad elements, Fraternities have managed to get a bad rap through the years. There are several misconceptions about Fraternities that are nothing if not completely false, in fact, some of these beliefs actually cause parents to discourage their kids to avoid Fraternities at any cost. Knowledge is power, but the truth is even more powerful, so let’s take a few minutes to Initiating through Hazing.
This is probably one of the biggest concerns that potential members and their families have about joining a Fraternity, will they be able to get through it? The truth of the matter is that hazing was very rampant in old school years, however, that requirement has been discontinued for some time. Like everything else, there will be a bad element, but the solution is to check into the Fraternity you are thinking about joining and find out what they are all about.
Nothing but one big party.
When students attend college, they are starting a new chapter in their lives, so it is expected that they would take on a few new challenges, but Fraternities are not a breeding ground for parties and the drug scene. There is no way that most of these students would be able to get through college and achieve their goals if they are constantly being exposed to a party. Fraternities actually lead by example and help their membership remain focused.

No Respect For Women.
The misconception of Fraternities being full of rich kids who simply do not know how to treat women have seriously jeopardized several potential relationships, many which could have turned into something long lasting. When a man fails to treat a woman with respect it is usually because they see that kind of behavior in their family life, Fraternities strive to teach their members that this is a stepping stone to becoming a better person for themselves and to those they come in contact with.
It is over after College.
After all the chaos, partying and mistreatment of women, the Fraternity ends cold once the college years are over. This is the furthest thing from the truth, especially since the camaraderie that comes out of a Fraternity is impossible to be denied. Fraternity members forge friendships that last long after college and in some cases may last a lifetime. Many of these friendships can be great for future careers if only for the fact that it is not only what you know but who you know.
The best thing a college student can do if they are thinking about joining a fraternity is to do their homework. Consider it as a company that you are thinking about joining, do they have good benefits and will you be happy there. Is there room for advancement and can you see this as a good career move. The biggest mistake you can make is to listen to gossip, it is usually wrong.”
